What is the best ISA?

We cannot tell you what the best ISA would be for you – only you can decide that. It is also impossible to say which ISA will produce the best returns. No one knows what the coming months and years will bring, and past returns are not a guide to future performance.

The important thing is to look for an ISA that is right for your current situation and your plans for the future. Here are some of the things you should think about when weighing up your options.

  • Do I want a cash ISA or a stocks and shares ISA? The money in a cash ISA is typically held in a deposit account, so in the current environment of low interest rates, the returns are likely to be low and may not even keep pace with inflation. On the other hand, you know your money will not lose value and it will be there if you need it at short notice. With a stocks and shares ISA, you can choose investments with more growth potential, but there is also a possibility that the value of your savings will fall. That is why you need to be thinking long-term with a stocks and shares ISA, probably at least five years.
  • What will the charges be? Each provider will charge in a different way, so you may want to shop around. With a Fidelity Stocks and Shares ISA you will pay our clear and simple Service Fee, which is typically 0.35% of the value of your account, and there are competitive transaction charges for buying and selling certain types of investments, such as company shares. There will also be management charges on any funds you choose for your ISA. These are usually the same no matter which company you invest through, but we have been able to negotiate discounts on a number of funds for our customers. Find out more about Fidelity ISA fees.
  • How much choice will I have? You can hold a wide variety of investments in an ISA.
